Fertility British Society specialized journal, Human Fertility, publishes an Instituto Bernabeu investigation exempting the sperm fragmentation from the used reproductive techniques

  • 28-01-2021

Constant research characterizes Instituto Bernabeu, who never stopped publishing scientific works developed by its doctors. All with the aim of improving patient care and delving into solutions to the increasingly complex problems.

With the start of 2021, Instituto Bernabeu once again captures the interest of a scientific journal, in this case the prestigious Human Fertility, a publication of the British Fertility Society, which has echoed the following study: “Sperm DNA fragmentation on the day of fertilization is not associated with assisted reproductive technique outcome independently of gamete quality”.

The research has been carried out with the double-blind method, the exhaustiveness of which prevents any bias from occurring. The objective was to determine if the sperm’s DNA fragmentation on the day of the egg fertilization influences the results and after analysing the results of the study, the researchers deduce that these are not affected, regardless of the quality of the gametes.

The research work has been carried out in the Embryology unit, the Molecular Biology and Genetics laboratory and the Reproductive Medicine Unit for three years.Evaluating the results obtained during the assisted reproduction treatment of 331 couples divided into three groups according to the developed technique: couples who underwent intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) due to poor sperm parameters and a normal ovarian response;couples undergoing conventional in vitro fertilization (IVF) in the oocyte donation program due to ovarian failure mainly due to advanced maternal age;and couples with low ovarian response (LOR) undergoing ICSI or IVF.

Sperm DNA fragmentation on the day of fertilisation is not associated with assisted reproductive technique outcome independently of gamete quality.
